Grandmother's Eyes

In that old battered photo, what do I see?
In my grandmother's eyes, looking at me
A story quite real, but not vivid or bold
A young woman's secrets, never once told

She smiles, but her eyes show a far deeper cause
A lifetime of dreams, lived behind closed doors
I wonder what it was like, to keep all inside
In my grandmother's eyes, I see other thoughts hide

lyrics record cover

Her face tells a tale of when life was quite raw
Where her parents and family were all of the law
Reading her face though gentle and kind
In my grandmother's eyes, I see her resigned

She smiles, but her eyes said so much more
A lifetime of dreams, behind a closed door
I wonder what it was like, to keep it all inside
With her hopes yet no-one there to confide

In that old battered photo, what do I see?
In my grandmother's eyes, looking at me
A story quite real, but not vivid or bold
A young woman's secrets, never once told

She smiles, but her eyes said so much more
